# Lesson Structure

(Course Builder → Templates → Lesson Structure)

MindEngage’s *Lesson Structure* dialog lets you define both the **global settings** for every lesson you generate **and** the **building-block components** (fragments) that will appear in each lesson or section. Think of it as a recipe: the **Settings** are the base ingredients, while **Lesson Components** are the step-by-step instructions the AI follows when writing.

### 2 Lesson Components (fragments)

Below the Settings pane you’ll see a checklist of *fragments*—mini-prompts the AI stitches together.\
Key points to remember:

* **Scope** – `lesson` fragments appear **once** (e.g., *Objectives*), while `section` fragments repeat inside **every** major section (e.g., *Examples*).
* **Order** – Drag ▲▼ to reorder; the AI follows the list top-to-bottom.
* **Enable/Disable** – Uncheck a fragment to omit it entirely.
* **Multiline** – Fragments accept rich instructions; use them to enforce word limits, ask for call-outs, etc.

| Fragment | Scope | Default prompt text (shortened) |
| ----------------- | ------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Objectives** | lesson | “Start with clear learning objectives (3-5 measurable objectives)… (≤ 5 words each)” |
| **Prerequisites** | lesson | “Include a brief pre-requisite knowledge section… (≤ 3 items, ≤ 5 words each)” |
| **Structure** | section | “Structured sections of \~4000 words… deep insights, logical flow” |
| **Examples** | section | “Provide concise, clear examples illustrating theory” |
| **Did You Know** | section | “Highlighted sidebars with historical/practical insights” |
| **Summary** | section | “Summarize key points at the end of each section” |
| **Reflection** | section | “Reflective questions encouraging critical thinking” |
| **Glossary** | lesson | “Short integrated glossary of key terms” |
| **Citations** | lesson | “In-text citations + references list” |

{% hint style="info" %}
**Tip:** Want a *case study* after each section? Duplicate **Examples**, rename to *Case Study*, change the prompt, and keep scope = `section`.

### Frequently-asked “What if…?”

| Question | Answer |
| ----------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| *Can I add my own fragment?* | Yes—click **➕ Add Component**, give it a label, scope, and prompt text. |
| *Can one section be longer than another?* | Yes—set **Sections per Lesson** to match the *maximum* and instruct the AI inside each *Structure* fragment, e.g., “Section 1 ≈ 5000 words, Sections 2-3 ≈ 3000 words”. |
| *How do I force APA citations?* | Add a fragment or modify **Citations** to include “Use APA style”. |
| *I don’t need a glossary every time.* | Uncheck **Glossary** or set scope =`section` if only certain sections need vocab. |

### Best practices

* **Be explicit, be concise** – Short, directive phrases (“≤ 25 words”, “include 3 reflection questions”) guide the LLM better than broad requests.
* **Scope wisely** – Over-using `section` scope may bloat each section. Only repeat what truly belongs everywhere.
* **Iterate** – Generate, skim, tweak prompts, and regenerate; small prompt edits often yield big quality jumps.
